GUIDE FOR WHAT TO SEEK BEFORE BUYING ELECTRIC BIKE

Now that the excellent weather slowly appears and the hours of sunshine lengthen, you want to do more outdoor activities, and the bicycle is always a good alternative. If we also want to go to work in this means of transport but without supposing to be sweating, the electric bike is an excellent option to combine exercise and transportation.

It is also for group sports, although we are not as fit as the rest. It is no longer unusual to see cyclist squadrons who go out to ride in which some of them, who can train less during the week, take an electric bike. The category of best-selling electric bicycles is mountain and trekking, where in France in 2018, 65,000 and 63,000 units were sold, respectively. Electric bicycles already account for 13% of total sales in that country.

The electric bike legislation

The electric bicycle will be affected by the same rules as the rest of the bikes. That is, in the city, the use of the helmet is not mandatory, but not on interurban roads and roads. They will not be able to drive on the sidewalks unless they specially indicated for this, and they have to drive along the roadway like other vehicles.

A driver’s license is not needed, as would be the case with a moped. But you do need to know the traffic code, know the road signs and respect them. The bicycle must have a white front and red rear light whenever it is traveling in conditions of reduced light or at night.

It is not mandatory to have insurance. In this sense, the European Parliament voted in 2019 to exclude electric bicycles from this obligation, provided that its engine does not exceed 25 km of speed in the assistance of a power exceeding 250 W.

Nor do they have to pay road tax to vehicles with mechanical traction since they not homologated to them. Of course, in an accident, if we do not have insurance, we will take care of damages caused to a vehicle or a pedestrian, as the case may be, by our means.

Pedaling assistance

So far, the regulations are more or less familiar to any bicycle. In the case of the electric ones, the specific one that affects your electric motor and the limitations imposed by pedaling assistance added. In this case, bicycles with assisted pedaling, equipped with an auxiliary electric motor, with a maximum continuous nominal power of 0.25 kilowatts, whose power decreases progressively and is finally interrupted when the vehicle speed reaches 25 km / h, or earlier if the cyclist stops pedaling

The bicycles must be approved by the Ministry of Industry, following standard UNE-EN 15194: 2009. If you have an accelerator similar to that of a motorcycle, which allows you to start the march without pedaling, mopeds considered. The same happens if your motor exceeds 250W, or the pedaling assistance does not stop when it reaches 25 km / h. In this case, it is necessary to register a vehicle, having insurance, and a license for driving.

Types of electric bicycle batteries and autonomy

As in any electric vehicle, cells play a crucial role when choosing. When starting, we would see if we are looking for a bicycle with removable batteries or that integrated into the frame. The main advantage of the first is that we can take them with us if we park the bike on the street and recharge them at work or at home more comfortable than having to ride the bike to our home.

If we prefer that they integrated into the table, at the aesthetic level, they are more concealed. It would be the most similar option to a conventional bicycle, regardless of the type chosen, be it a folding, urban or mountain. We will practically not notice the difference, beyond a greater weight and the assistance selector that we want to apply.

When choosing it, look at the recharge cycles that the battery allows and the ease of replacement in the future. Especially if we plan to do many kilometers with this vehicle, as would be the case with a daily commute to work, the more recharge cycles the stamina is better.

Finally, autonomy linked to its energy storage capacity. The most efficient batteries are usually those of lithium-ion, while the cheapest ones are generally lead, also heavier. The greater the storage capacity, the more autonomy they allow, although it taken into account that lithium ones are more efficient.

The autonomy we achieve will also depend on the weight of the cyclist and the terrain to travel . Will not achieve the same performance someone who weighs 90 kilos and has to climb slopes than a cyclist who weighs 75 and takes a flat course. The same said about the bike. The usual thing is that they allow realizing routes between 50 and 60 kilometers with assistance to the pedaling without problems. It will also vary with the amount of help it gives us since the electric bike allows us to regulate how much we want the electric motor to push.

Where is the engine located?

When choosing a model, it is interesting to consider where the engine located. There are usually two trends, on the axle or the wheel. It is a matter of efficiency and sensations. With the motor on the axle, the usual pedaling of a bicycle felt more. It is the most suitable when we talk about sports with the bike, for MTB or even road. Besides, having a torque motion sensor, on the axis itself, when the pedal pushed, the electric motor starts running, and the bike goes off, although it depends on the manufacturer and how it regulates the power delivery.

In the case of the wheel motor, a motion sensor included, so it takes half or three-quarters of a turn to come into play. For more urban use, they usually go in the rear wheel, although it depends on the model, since some place it in the front to achieve double traction, that of the front wheel by the engine and the rear by the pedal.

Which electric bike model to choose?

And now that we have clear some concepts of electric bicycles, choose the model. And here it will not be very different from what we should consider in any other bike. It is interesting to ask yourself some questions:

– What use can we give regularly? Urban, mountain, road or mixed, cargo.

– Where are we going to save? Do we need it to be foldable? And to charge the batteries?

– What bike range can I afford? As in everything, we have a low, medium, or high range.

– What price do I pay?

Based on it, we propose some models so you can choose and serve for your preference.
